Christmas Lights 2025 turned São Paulo’s Historic Downtown into an open-air Christmas circuit, blending art, history, tourism, and immersive visuals. The tour begins at Praça da Sé, where the official opening featured themed lighting and festive decor, including a beautifully lit Cathedral that quickly became a photo hotspot for visitors and families. From there, the walk continues through iconic locations such as Viaduto Santa Ifigênia, Largo São Bento, Pateo do Collegio, Praça do Patriarca, Edifício Matarazzo (City Hall), and Viaduto do Chá. This event isn’t new. Originally launched in the early 2000s as a joint initiative between local businesses and the city government, it has grown over the years into a holiday tradition. In 2025, the Christmas Lights project expanded even more, with installations in every district of the city, special bus lines connecting decorated zones, nightly light shows, and interactive photo-friendly displays. According to São Paulo’s City Hall, this event is expected to generate over R$ 2 billion in local economic impact and create up to 18,000 seasonal jobs, boosting both tourism and local commerce. At Largo São Bento, a full-sized ice skating rink attracts large crowds and encourages visitors to stay longer. Meanwhile, Pateo do Collegio offers a more peaceful moment, featuring a life-sized nativity scene placed exactly where the city of São Paulo was founded in 1554. As visitors stroll down Rua São Bento, Rua Direita, and XV de Novembro, they walk through illuminated corridors that blend historical architecture with modern Christmas aesthetics. The visual highlight of the night is at Praça do Patriarca and the Edifício Matarazzo. A massive Christmas tree and projection-mapped light shows on the City Hall façade draw thousands every evening. With synchronized light displays from 7 PM to 11 PM, the city transforms into a public stage where spectators become part of the spectacle. The walking tour ends at Viaduto do Chá, offering panoramic views of the fully lit city center. The decorations stay up until January 6, 2026, bridging the Christmas season with the city’s massive New Year's Eve celebration on Avenida Paulista, featuring live concerts and silent fireworks.
