Profile: Johanne Defay's Remarkable Ride to the Top

It's not what happens to you that determines how far you will go in life, but how you handle what happens to you. So goes the saying. In the case of Johanne Defay, one of the most dynamic talents on the women's Championship Tour, when the going got tough, she wasn't the only one who rallied. Her tight-knit community of friends and loved ones stepped up too. Defay was born in France, but grew up on Reunion Island, a small serene paradise hidden in the middle of the Indian Ocean. While it's an incredible place to grow up as a surfer, as Defay learned, it's not the easiest place to launch a surfing career. Shaped by the struggle, Defay has become one of the most endearing personalities on Tour, and an incredible talent, too.
