Vanishing Kings: The Last Ark is a 2023 nature documentary series. It was produced by a filmaking team that has won seven Taiwanese Golden Bell Awards (equivalent to the American Emmy Awards). The Golden-Bell-winning host, Claire Meng-lan Shu, is also one of the producers. Arctic tundra, the Australian mainland and the mountain forests of Taiwan serve as the settings of this series, which documents precious endangered species that only live in these ecologies: polar bears, Formosan black bears and koalas. The series tells the stories of these iconic animals, but because of the increasing danger of climate change and human development, they are each heading towards extinction. When these critical species that are indicators of ecological health disappear, what consequences will we humans bear? Episode 3 "The Redemption of Black August" tells the story about the plight the koala is facing. "Black August" refers to August 1927. This is the month when Australia's iconic species, the koala, had the worst disaster on earth! For decades koalas were hunted for the fur trade, and in 1927 the Australian government finally decided to preserve this species, announcing August of the year being the last hunting season. As a result, hunters rushed to hunt in August, which caused devastating damage to koalas. August 1927 became the first chapter of koala conservation, but it was also the most heart-wrenching page, remembered as the "Black August" in Australia.
