Residents of the Azteca neighborhood organized a public wake for Don Modesto Vargas, a 72-year-old man who died of natural causes, completely alone and with no family members to claim his body. Upon learning that the elderly man's remains (who had worked in construction, flooring, and carpeting) were at risk of being sent to a mass grave, the residents decided to claim his body and placed a simple coffin under a tent in front of number 2391 on Sochimilcas Street. To give him a dignified Christian burial, the residents set up a collection box at the site to raise 13,500 pesos, the amount required for funeral services and a burial plot. During the live broadcast, reporters clarified that bank account numbers would not be provided to avoid misunderstandings, urging the supportive community of Ciudad Juárez to go directly to the address to deposit their financial contributions and thus avoid burying the elderly man in a common grave.
