The Velo family produces blackberries year-round using hydroponics at Finca El Bosque, in Lucena del Puerto (Huelva). Initially, “La Canastita” was the name of their tomato factory, which exported to England and Germany and won several international awards. Later, they dedicated themselves to winemaking and other agricultural and livestock ventures, and finally, they decided to focus on blackberries, importing varieties from the United States. The family business took over at El Bosque, and from the beginning, they focused on exporting. Their main achievement has been overcoming the seasonality of blackberry cultivation, which was concentrated in the spring months, and becoming the leading producers in Europe. But their greatest success has been reaching the national market through a major supermarket chain. “Agrícola El Bosque,” ​​the company's name, is currently expanding and has extended its cultivation to other nearby municipalities. Their commitment to hydroponic cultivation has allowed them to achieve continuous production throughout the year and has enabled them to minimize water consumption. A series of sensors in the flowerpots connect to a computer that provides the watering instructions. In addition to the quality parameters, it is also a practically organic product. Far from using pesticides against pests, they use a biological control system.
