They are soon forced to retreat to their exploration vessel after discovering that the planet harbors hostile life forms. Buzz damages the ship during the retreat, forcing the crew to evacuate for repairs before continuing their journey. A year later, the crew has built a fledgling colony along with the necessary infrastructure for repairs. Buzz volunteers to test hyperspace fuel, a key component of the repairs. However, after a four-minute test, he discovers that four years have passed on T'Kani Prime due to the effects of time dilation from traveling at faster-than-light speeds. Buzz then meets Sox, a robotic feline, and continues testing the hyperspace fuel. With each test, another four years pass on T'Kani Prime, until finally more than 62 years have elapsed. During this time, the colony develops; Alisha raises a son with her wife Kiko, and later dies of old age; and Sox manages to find a solution to the fuel composition problems, making it more stable and allowing it to achieve faster-than-light speeds. Against the orders of his new commanding officer, Commander Burnside, Buzz uses this new fuel composition for a successful hyperspace test. Upon landing, Buzz discovers that 22 years have passed, during which T'Kani Prime has been invaded by cyclopean robots led by the mysterious Zurg. Buzz encounters members of the colony's defense forces, including Izzy Hawthorne, Alisha's now-adult granddaughter; Mo Morrison, a new and naive recruit; and Darby Steel, an elderly convict on parole. Although initially reluctant to work with them, Buzz eventually warmed to them.
