All Caramel Malts Aren’t the Same: Caramünich vs CaraAroma (All-Grain Test)
£In this experiment, I put two popular caramel malts head-to-head to answer a simple question: are all caramel malts really the same? Using the exact same all-grain recipe, I brewed a split batch beer with Caramünich Type I on one side and CaraAroma on the other — and the results honestly surprised me. This was a full all-grain brew, hopped entirely with homegrown hops from my own garden, which makes this comparison even more interesting. Same base wort, same hops, same fermentation setup — the only real variable here is the caramel malt. The beers end up looking incredibly close in color, but once you start digging into aroma, flavor, mouthfeel, and balance, the differences begin to show. If you’re looking for the full recipes, I’ve done dedicated videos for each beer, where I go much deeper into the malt bill, brewing process, and final result. The recipes for both the Caramünich Type I beer and the CaraAroma beer are linked below if you want to brew them yourself. This is exactly the kind of malt swap many homebrewers make without thinking twice, so I wanted to test it properly and share what actually happens in the glass. I do these experiments so you don’t have to. A big shout-out to Angel Yeast for sponsoring this video and helping me keep these brewing experiments going for you. I’ve used their yeasts extensively over the years, and they’ve been absolute workhorses for clean, reliable fermentations.
