Transformer Coupled Amplifier 1. Introduction A transformer coupled amplifier is a type of multistage transistor amplifier where the output of one stage is coupled to the input of the next stage through a transformer. Instead of using RC coupling, the transformer transfers AC signal power and also provides impedance matching between stages or between amplifier and load. 2. Circuit Diagram (Explanation) A transistor amplifier with a transformer connected at the collector (output). The primary winding of the transformer is connected in the collector circuit. The secondary winding is connected either to: The next amplifier stage, or The load (e.g., loudspeaker). 3. Working Principle The AC signal from the transistor flows through the transformer primary. By mutual induction, an amplified signal is induced in the secondary. Transformer provides voltage step-up or step-down depending on the turns ratio. Provides maximum power transfer by matching amplifier output impedance with load impedance. 4. Advantages Efficient Impedance Matching – load (speaker) impedance can be matched with amplifier output. High Power Output – more suitable for power amplification (final stages). No DC Loss in Transformer – since transformer blocks DC, only AC power is transferred. Improved Power Transfer – reduces power wastage. 5. Disadvantages Poor Frequency Response – transformers work well only over a limited frequency range (bad for audio fidelity). Bulky & Expensive – transformers increase size and cost. Distortion – non-linearities in transformer cause harmonic distortion. Noisy & Less Reliable – humming, core saturation, and losses affect performance. Bandwidth Limitation – unsuitable for high-frequency (RF) wideband amplifiers. 6. Applications Power amplifiers (last stage in audio systems to drive loudspeakers). Impedance matching between amplifier stages. RF amplifiers (with tuned transformers for selectivity). Public address systems for maximum power delivery to speakers.
