Background: The film footage dates from the early stages of the 1933-1934 construction of the steel-truss Upper Black Eddy-Milford Bridge. The Great Depression-era footage in this video includes the dismantling/demolition of the predecessor wooden-covered bridge, early truss construction preparations, and river flooding that occurred on August 25, 1933. The work was performed under a contract that the former Joint Commission for Elimination of Toll Bridges – Pennsylvania-New Jersey awarded to the McClintic-Marshall Co. of Bethlehem, PA., in March 1933. The project was funded jointly by the states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The former wooden bridge was closed to vehicular traffic June 5, 1933. McClintic-Marshall commenced erecting false works and dismantling the old bridge June 7, 1933. The steel replacement bridge was completed and opened to traffic at noon on January 13, 1934. The two states proceeded to hold title to the bridge until July 1, 1987, when ownership was conveyed to the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission.
