A Classical Janger Dance from Peliatan featuring the story of Arjuna’s Meditation The Janger dance is a social dance that is performed by a group of young men and women, the females playing the role of the Janger and the males that of the kecak. The Janger dance first began to be developed in Peliatan in the 1920s, and was subsequently performed overseas at the Paris Expo in 1931 and during Gunung Sari’s tour of Europe and America in 1952. The dance movements and song lyrics of the Janger dance, which are relatively simple and performed in a dynamic and cheerful manner, are accompanied by a few gamelan instruments or tetamburan and gender wayang. This Classical Janger of Peliatan is based on the story of Arjuna’s Meditation, which recounts of the time when Arjuna meditated on Mount Indrakila in order to obtain supernatural powers that would assist him to win in battle. However, while he was meditating and trying to concentrate his thoughts on Sang Hyang Widi Wasa, Arjuna had to resist various temptations and efforts to disturb his meditation. For example, Bhetara Indra sent two of his beautiful heavenly nymphs Supraba and Tilotama to tempt Arjuna and make him abandon his meditation. However, they were unsuccessful in their mission, as Arjuna ignored them and maintained his concentration. After that, a wild pig appeared and began shaking the area where Arjuna was meditating on Mount Indrakila so violently that eventually Arjuna became angry and shot at the pig with an arrow. However, the God Siwa also shot at the pig at the same time as Arjuna, leading to a dispute between the two over who had killed the wild pig, since both were convinced that it was their arrow that had killed the pig. Eventually the dispute ended when Siwa transformed himself into the witch Rangda, and as Arjuna had successfully carried out his meditation, the God Siwa rewarded him with a gift of a magic weapon called Pusaka Pasupati Winibasara, which gave Arjuna supernatural powers.
