Founded in 2011, AKM-Avia produces wind tunnels and unmanned aerial vehicles, developed the single-seat AKM-3, and has now begun production of the AKM-5, a high-speed aircraft for long-distance cross-country flights. Its flight characteristics allow a pilot and a passenger to fly up to two thousand kilometers in a single day at a cruising speed of 230 kilometers per hour—a distance unimaginable for drivers, but perfectly acceptable for aviation. The AKM-5 is powered by the Rotax 912 engine, proven over millions of flight hours in thousands of different aircraft. It consumes 17 liters of gasoline per hour of cruising flight, allowing the AKM-5, with its 100-liter fuel tanks, to fly up to 1,000 kilometers without refueling. The aircraft's controls are also unremarkable, except for one that makes it convenient for long-haul flights. Sitting in the AKM-5's cockpit is truly comfortable. Although the aircraft doesn't look particularly large from the outside, its elbow room is 118 centimeters, similar to that of a Cessna 182. Two people weighing over 100 kilograms each can comfortably hold a thermos, for example, to pour tea or coffee, or to have a snack, without bumping into each other. And the anatomically shaped seat is specifically designed for long-haul flights. During travel, passengers can comfortably use a laptop, working or watching a movie, and the pilot at altitude is only required to monitor the instruments and maintain radio communications. Many foreign manufacturers produce high-speed cruise aircraft, but the AKM-5, compared to similar aircraft with relatively similar specifications, has a distinct advantage: price. The aircraft, complete with a parachute rescue system, heated cabin, and heated carburetors, costs three million three hundred thousand rubles, making it easily affordable for companies and middle-class individuals who frequently fly on business. For those ready to assemble the aircraft themselves, AKM-Avia offers a kit for one million three hundred thousand rubles. The kit is an airframe without an engine, instruments, electronics, trim, or paint. The kit requires the purchase and installation of the engine, instruments, and control assembly. The AKM-5 has a fixed landing gear with a steerable pendulum-type nose wheel. Some pilots believe that retractable landing gear is better for high-speed aircraft, but the aircraft's chief designer and company director, Roman Pletnev, disagrees. Comfort, simplicity, and reliability are the three main design principles behind the AKM. An aircraft with a standard takeoff load of three-quarters of its maximum requires 120 meters for takeoff and landing, and any airfield or flat runway at least 400 meters long is sufficient. Reliability is ensured by both the mandatory rescue system and its flight characteristics. For example, it has a safe stall. From the previous AKM-5, released last year, this modification features slotted flaps, which improve takeoff and landing performance, improved airflow management in the engine compartment, a variable-pitch propeller with a constant-speed automatic, and plans to improve the autopilot soon.
