Tracing the Somerset & Dorset Railway from Bruton to Wincanton
In this video I walk from Bruton to Wincanton in order to discover what can still be seen of the Somerset and Dorset Railway, between Bridge Nº 124, which carried the line over the A359 between Castle Cary and Bruton, and Bridge Nº 137, which carried the line over the B3081, the Sherborne Road, in Wincanton. The only bridges that remain are Nº 125, near Shepton Montague, and Nº 127, Rock Cutting Bridge. Bridge Nº 126, over the River Pitt, may also exist but I was unable to access that one to check. Much of the trackbed does still exist, albeit very much overgrown, although there are sections where it has disappeared altogether. This is especially so upon reaching Wincanton where virtually all trace of the railway has been virtually eradicated. There used to be five road under bridges in Wincanton (Nºs 132 to 137) but all have been demolished. I did discover Bridge Nº 131, Plumer's Bridge, just before reaching Verrington, which was a total surprise since I did not know this one existed. It is still there albeit partially hidden now. The trackbed between the outskirts of Wincanton and Cole could make a very useful, level and fairly straight footpath/trailway but, sadly, I very much doubt this will ever happen. Finally, the two wonderful photographs of Wincanton station by R C Riley, that I have included at the end of the video are from the excellent two part publication entitled 'A Pictorial Atlas of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway' by Richard Harman and Neil Parkhouse. This is such an magnificent and highly informative read that, if you are a fan of the S&D and do not already own a copy, I very much urge you to obtain one. It is not cheap but it is well worth the investment.
