Recently, in Changhua, a police chase involving a drug-driving suspect resulted in the suspect ramming into the head of the Puyan Precinct police station, breaking both of the officer's legs. The judge subsequently ruled that the suspect could not be released on bail, citing "inconclusive evidence of intentional ramming of officers," sparking public outrage. Rumors even circulated that the same judge had previously ruled on the release of a gas truck drug-driving suspect without bail, further fueling public and police anger. Following this, the Changhua District Court clarified that it respected the judge's legal opinion and that it should not be interpreted as condoning drug-driving. Afterwards, Changhua... The district court also reversed the verdict and ordered detention. The lenient sentences for drug driving in recent years have long been a source of public discontent, with even the opposition party pointing out that such punishments have no deterrent effect. At the time, judicial officials said they would provide further training for judges, but two years later, a driver who crashed his gas truck while under the influence of drugs was released without bail, and someone who ran over a policeman's legs was also released without detention.
