DEMOKRAT PARTİ'NİN MİLLİ SAVUNMA BAKANI, 27 MAYIS'IN ÖNÜNÜ BÖYLE AÇTI

ATATÜRK SENT HIS FATHER INTO EXILE AS A "TRAITOR": THE REAL LEADER OF MAY 27TH, CEMAL MADANOĞLU • ATATÜRK, ONUN BABASINI "VATAN HAİNİ" DİYE ... In this program, I examine the case of Hasan Şemi Ergin, who played a critical role in the events leading up to the May 27, 1960 coup. In this program, I examine, based on available sources, the extent to which Ergin, who served as Minister of National Defense in Democratic Party governments, was aware of the coup activities within the army, how he approached the tip-offs he received, and why he remains a controversial figure today. I am not only telling the story through Hasan Şemi Ergin. I am also going behind the scenes of the Nine Officers Incident, considered a harbinger of the May 27th coup. I am following step by step how Staff Major Samet Kuşçu reported the coup preparations, why these reports were unsuccessful, and which links within the state mechanism were broken. I am seeking the answer to one of the most striking paradoxes in Turkish political history: Why was the person who reported the coup preparations punished, while those whose names were mentioned in the coup preparations continued to rise in rank? The program also devotes considerable space to the story of Staff Lieutenant Colonel Faruk Güventürk. I explain how Güventürk, who went to the office of Defense Minister Hasan Şemi Ergin and spoke of overthrowing the government and invited him to head the new order, became one of the key actors in the coup in later years. I trace, through documents and memoirs, how a structure that emerged in 1957 transformed into a coup that changed Türkiye's fate a few years later. Another important figure in this file is Adnan Çelikoğlu. In his memoirs, published years later, he recounts in his own words how he suppressed documents related to Samet Kuşçu's denunciations and how he influenced the course of the investigation. Therefore, throughout the program, I examine not only the visible actors but also the names behind the scenes. Hasan Şemi Ergin's diaries and memoirs also constitute an important part of the program. His notes criticizing some of the Democratic Party's practices, his assessments of events during İnönü's visits, and especially the missing pages from that critical period, raise questions that still demand answers today. Therefore, I'm not just recounting what happened; I'm also considering different possibilities regarding why Ergin remained silent. Was it fear? Negligence? A miscalculation? Or a conscious choice? In the final segment of the program, I include Celal Bayar's remarkable self-criticism, made years later. Bayar's statements regarding the release of those preparing for the coup and the punishment of informants open an extremely important window into understanding the mistakes of that era. Thus, I examine not only the story of a minister but also how one of the most important turning points in Türkiye's democratic history took shape. The Hasan Şemi Ergin case carries a meaning far beyond a single person's biography. In this program, I try to show that coups are made possible not only by tanks but sometimes also by silence, delayed decisions, and unused powers. Together, we evaluate how the decisions made and not made in the process leading up to May 27th affected Türkiye's political history. In Rubicon History, this time I address a minister overshadowed by a coup and the controversial legacy he left behind.
