"You haven't truly been to Xinjiang if you haven't been to Kashgar." This city, nestled in southwestern Xinjiang at the eastern foot of the Pamir Plateau, was formerly known as "Shule," meaning "a place where jade gathers" in Uyghur. It boasts a history of over 2100 years. Nestled against the Tianshan Mountains to the north, overlooking the Kunlun Mountains to the south, bordering the Pamir Plateau to the west, and facing the Taklamakan Desert to the east, it was a crossroads of the ancient Silk Road, a vital stop on the journeys of Xuanzang, Ban Chao, and Marco Polo. For two millennia, the sound of camel bells has never ceased, and Eastern and Western civilizations have collided and blended here, making Kashgar a living ancient city and a living fossil of Western Region culture. Han, Uyghur, Tajik, and Kyrgyz peoples live together here, with Chinese, Uyghur, and Russian languages intertwined, and ancient customs coexisting with modern life. As China's westernmost city, Kashgar experiences sunrise and sunset 2-3 hours later than inland China. Locals typically work from 10 am to 8 pm, a unique work schedule that allows you to experience the slower pace of life in the western regions. Today, Kashgar is the starting point of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and a bridgehead for westward opening, with the ancient Silk Road revitalized. If the ancient city is the cultural soul of Kashgar, then the cattle and sheep bazaar is its vibrant heart. Without visiting the bazaar, you cannot understand southern Xinjiang; without strolling through the cattle and sheep bazaar, you haven't truly experienced the wildness and vitality of Kashgar. On bazaar days, the area transforms into the most bustling scene in the western regions: the sounds of cattle mooing, sheep bleating, horses' hooves, vendors' shouts, and the sizzling of roasted meat intertwine, with hundreds and thousands of cattle, sheep, and horses huddled together, a scene comparable to the "animal world's Spring Festival travel rush." Most mysteriously, there's the "trading behind sleeves"—the only remaining ancient bargaining method in Central and West Asia, best preserved in the Kashgar bazaar. The buyer and seller slipped their hands into each other's wide sleeves, subtly gesturing with their fingers: one finger represented 1, two fingers 2, and a fist 10. Silent bargaining ensued, without a word or price quote; only the unspoken understanding remained. There were no fixed prices, no cold electronic payments, only trust, tacit understanding, and generosity between people. When the transaction was successful, the two exchanged high-fives and hugs, while onlookers offered their congratulations. This pure, heartwarming human connection was more touching than any other transaction. #Xinjiang
