사라진줄 알았던 ′뿔호반새 75년 만에 발견'(2024.12.2/뉴스데스크/MBC경남)
#CrownRook #Jirisan #Wildlife #River #EndangeredSpecies ◀ Anchor ▶ The CrownRook, previously removed from the list of wild animals in Korea, has been discovered in a stream at the foot of Mt. Jiri. This is the first time a CrownRook has been observed in Korea in 75 years. Reporter Lee Jun-seok reports. ◀ Report ▶ A bird preens itself and flies to a nearby rock. With densely spotted white wings on a black background, and a head with long feathers protruding, it is the CrownRook, known as a winter migratory bird. ◀ INT ▶ Park Jin-young, Director of the Biodiversity Research Division at the National Institute of Biological Resources "The bird photographed has a pale reddish-brown pattern on its neck and chest. It is a male. The female does not have this reddish-brown pattern." The CrownRook was photographed in a stream at the foot of Mt. Jiri on the 26th of last month. ◀ INT ▶ Choi Sang-du, Photographing the Horned Kingfisher / Representative of Otter Friends "I'm always out photographing otters, but I heard a strange sound, so I checked and suddenly there was a strange bird. A beautiful and unique bird..." There are reports of a Horned Kingfisher being seen in Yeongdo, Busan, in 1958, but the last recorded sighting was in Seoul in 1949. ◀ INT ▶ Park Jin-young, Director of the Biodiversity Research Division, National Institute of Biological Resources "There have been no records since the 1950s, so this is the first new record in about 75 years." The stream where the Horned Kingfisher was found is a haven for various rare wildlife, including the Scaly-sided Merganser, a Red-listed endangered species. However, its habitat is deteriorating. ◀ INT ▶ Choi Sang-du, Representative of Otter Friends "Due to river dredging projects and livestock wastewater, wildlife has become uninhabitable. We are disclosing this information to ask for your protection." As news of the horned kingfisher sighting spread, birders with telephoto cameras flocked to the area, raising concerns that they might be driving away the birds. ◀ INT ▶ Kwon Dong-hee, Seongnam City, Gyeonggi Province "About 40 to 50 vehicles and a hundred people came, but they didn't harm the birds or the residents..." Experts advise that at least some sections of the rivers along the foot of Mt. Jiri should be designated as ecological landscape conservation areas and managed to ensure coexistence with wildlife, including the horned kingfisher, which has returned after a 75-year absence.
