Explaining Juneteenth & Emancipation
The Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln on 1 January 1863 freed only slaves in rebel states. The last slaves in the rebel states to know they were free were in Galveston, Texas where Major General Gordon Granger declared their freedom on June 19, 1865.
