The Ongamira Caves are considered one of the 7 natural wonders of Córdoba. Don't miss them! Ongamira is located north of the Punilla Valley, 115 kilometers from Córdoba. Its natural setting invites adventure and is an ideal place to learn about the indigenous peoples of Córdoba. The area is of archaeological interest, as it is inhabited by ethnic groups who use it as a settlement. Wind and water erosion forms large natural walls and overhangs that the indigenous people take advantage of. Archaeologists are currently working on the site. You can visit a research area and a series of overhangs with mortars. The Ongamira Valley creates a rare and extremely attractive landscape. As you travel through the region, you can observe the contrast of the red sandstone rock with the green mountain landscape. The main hiking attractions are the Ongamira Caves area—with easy trails—and Charalqueta or Colchiqui Hill, which rises to 1,575 meters above sea level and offers the best viewpoint in the entire Ongamira Valley. This trail, steeped in nature and history, takes us on a journey through time. According to history—recorded in documents from the colonizers themselves—during the Spanish invasion, some indigenous people sacrificed themselves from the top of the hill to avoid servitude. From the top, you have panoramic views of the Ongamira Valley and the Sierras Chicas. Guided tours of archaeological excavations and the traveling museum are also available. All of these sites are located on private land, so an entrance fee is required. How to get there: Take RN 38 toward Charbonier. Enter the road at km 91, then travel 17 km on gravel toward Ongamira.
