ESPECIAL BR-319 DE KOMBI - de Porto Velho a Manaus

The BR-319, also known as the Manaus-Porto Velho Highway, is a federal highway approximately 855 kilometers long. It is the only highway connecting the states of Amazonas and Rondônia. Inaugurated in 1976, the highway was completely paved, allowing travel from Manaus to Porto Velho in about 12 hours. Due to lack of maintenance, several sections of asphalt have been lost over time, or intentionally destroyed by human action. The history of the WORST HIGHWAY in Brazil Built between 1968 and 1976 during the Military Regime, the BR-319 was seen as strategic for the National Integration Plan, which aimed to connect the most remote regions of Brazil, promoting economic development for these regions, as well as strengthening border security. The military government feared that certain uninhabited regions of Brazilian territory could be claimed by other countries, especially the Amazon region. For this reason, the construction of the Manaus-Porto Velho highway received government priority, being completed in less than 8 years. However, after the 1970s, the BR-319 began to suffer from neglect and abandonment by the federal government. Several factors contributed to this, including: An economic crisis that began in the late 1970s, which limited government investments. Highly unstable soil and high rainfall in the region, which required constant maintenance of the highway. Overweight vehicles, most of which travel without inspection on the road. Evidence of sabotage by barge owners in the region. This last point generates discussion to this day. Residents of the region confirm having witnessed machines and tractors destroying the highway's asphalt. There are reports that even explosives, such as dynamite, were used in this action. However, no investigation was launched at the time. However, it is undeniable that the riverboat operators in the region earn millions a year transporting vehicles and people along the Madeira River, and it would not be in their interest for the BR-319 highway to have good traffic conditions. These and other factors contributed to the fact that, over the years, a large part of the original asphalt was lost, creating a stretch of almost 500 kilometers of dirt road, known as the Middle Section. Several governments have committed to revitalizing the highway, but no action has been taken. IS IT POSSIBLE TO TRAVEL ON BR-319 TODAY? The answer is IT DEPENDS! Anyone who decides to venture on BR-319 must take into account a very important factor: the rain! The Amazonian winter differs from the rest of Brazil, occurring between the months of December and May. At this time of year, there is the highest incidence of rain, which causes many areas to become muddy. Therefore, it is recommended that only vehicles with higher suspension, such as pickup trucks and 4x4 vehicles, venture onto the BR-319 during this period. This doesn't mean that small cars can't manage the highway at this time. However, if this is your case, be prepared, as mechanical problems are very common, especially with the suspension, in addition to broken bumpers. The "quietest" period to cross the BR-319 is between June and October, known as the dry season in the northern region. The lower incidence of rain "facilitates" the trip between Manaus and Porto Velho. However, we must remember that the highway is located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, and sporadic rains occur at any time of year. Even if you decide to cross the BR-319 during the dry season, some precautions are necessary, as rain is not the only obstacle to such a trip. It is very important to bring food and water for at least 5 days. Even though small cars can cross the BR highway in less than 2 days, it's worth having food and water on hand in case of unforeseen events, such as a broken bridge, getting stuck in the mud, or if your vehicle breaks down along the way (remember that in the middle section, there are no towns, and you won't find any shops to buy these products). It's also essential to carry extra fuel! There are no gas stations for a good stretch of the road. It's recommended to carry about 20 liters of extra gasoline. ► Want to help us produce much more?
