About the Composition👀 The meaning Brahms used in this work was inspired by the FAE notes, which represent the musical motto 'Frei aber einsam' (Free but lonely) of his musician friend, violinist Joseph Joachim. He sent the completed score of the 'Symphony No. 3' to Clara Schumann to celebrate her birthday. Clara sent back high praise, stating: "What a work! What a poem! I could never say which movement is my favourite. Every movement is a piece, a heartbeat, all of them like jewels." Movement I. Allegro con brio - Un poco sostenuto The F-A♭-F notes proceed at a bright and steady pace. The strings lead the main theme, which is then sequentially taken up by the brass and woodwind instruments. Small romantic melodies develop into intense motives. The song of all the instruments in the orchestra, built on an unstable rhythmic structure, is joyful. Movement II. Andante Quiet and comfortable. The beautiful song of the woodwind instruments is joined by the strings. The orchestral timbres, shining like warm sunlight, show Brahms's unique lyrical movement. Clara Schumann sent her impressions of the second movement to Brahms in a letter, saying: "It is a pure paradise, one hears the murmur of the stream and the humming of insects. One feels drawn into the joyful embrace of nature." Movement III. Poco allegretto Clara Schumann left the impression that "the third movement is a pearl, but a grey pearl set in tears of sorrow." As her impression suggests, the emotion of this movement is sadness. The faint melodic song gradually accelerates instead of slowing down. The lingering melodies in the midst of it grow stronger and then fade away again. The song of the horn is especially beautiful. Movement IV. Allegro-Un poco sostenuto Brahms challenged the convention of the time by using a minor key for the final movement. It soars amidst the dramatic melody and harmonic development. Powerful and bright songs seem to rush towards one point. The majestic resonance of the percussion embraces the quickly rising melodies. These strides lead to movements of very small sound. Amidst the silence, the F-A♭-F theme of the first movement echoes and fades away.
