The passive crossover inside a speaker is one of the weakest points of a home audio system. It drains power, places a heavy load on the amplifier, and prevents the speakers from reaching their full potential. But what happens if you remove the passive filter and drive each speaker directly? In this video, we explore active speaker architecture and the digital crossover using the DBX DriveRack PA2 as an example. Why an active system isn't necessarily a "speaker with a built-in amplifier," why a digital crossover is better than an analog one, why delays between speakers are needed, why FIR filters aren't always the best choice for home use, and how to set up a three-way system without unnecessary magic. I also demonstrate the setup logic: crossover frequencies, Linkwitz-Riley filters, delays, band levels, XLR connection, remote control, and a practical example using upgraded S-90s. This video is for those who want to understand where to go after a good amplifier, a good DAC, and a good source—toward a new sound architecture. An active crossover is perhaps the last big step toward true acoustic control.
