Position the log pile away from human traffic. Get a variety of different types of logs, species, shape and size. bury some of the lower logs in soil to create a connection/interface with the earth, this encourages biodiversity. Drill a variety of size, shape and depth of holes into the logs for insects, point the holes down below horizontal so that they don't flood with water.
