At first, I thought going to Mont Blanc simply meant going to see one mountain. But after doing some research, I realized that Mont Blanc is actually an entire alpine region centered around the town of Chamonix. We visit three main places: taking the red Montenvers rack railway to Mer de Glace, the “Sea of Ice” glacier; seeing the reflection of the Mont Blanc massif by the lake; and finally going up to Aiguille du Midi at 3,842 meters, where we experience what it really means to be cold — and breathless — at high altitude. The glacier is disappearing. The lake makes time slow down. And up in the mountains, you really can run low on oxygen. The scenery is endless, but memory is limited.
