In 1945, Mikhail Mil began work on an experimental helicopter, which he named the GM-1. This machine was a three-seat helicopter built using a classic single-rotor design. Helicopter testing was conducted at Zakharkovo Airfield, not far from the well-known Tushino Airfield. The helicopter hovered reliably in the air, demonstrated good stability in flight, and was extremely maneuverable. During testing, the rotorcraft achieved a flight speed of 175 km/h and a service ceiling of 52,000 meters. On February 21, 1950, a decree was issued to begin serial production of the GM-1 helicopter, redesignated the Mi-1. The helicopter had a classic single-rotor design with a three-bladed main rotor and a tail rotor. The forward fuselage housed the cockpit with a pilot's station and a bench seat that could comfortably accommodate two passengers. The machine had a payload capacity of 255 kg. The power plant is a seven-cylinder AI-26 GRF radial piston engine developed by Alexander Ivchenko. The engine's power was sufficient to propel the two-ton aircraft to a speed of 185 km/h. The Mi-1 helicopter's main rotor blades were initially of mixed construction (steel and wood components, fabric and plywood covering), with a rotor diameter of 14.35 meters.
