LEBANON: NORWEGIAN UN TROOPS WOUNDED BY ISRAELI TANK FIRE

(10 Dec 1995) Natural Sound Three Norwegian UN peacekeeping soldiers were wounded on Sunday by Israeli tank cannon fire. The incident occurred on the tense border in southern Lebanon. The UN peacekeepers continued to keep up their visibility - with various roadblocks throughout the region. On the border of Israel and Lebanon, an Israeli tank wounded three Norwegian members of the U-N. The Israeli cannon fire hit the peacekeepers while they were on a foot patrol in southern Lebanon. The three peacekeepers were wounded when an Israeli battle tank guarding Israeli military headquarters in Marjayoun opened fire. The Israelis had spotted them patrolling a road three to four kilometers away and fired without warning. The five soldiers, all wearing olive-green uniforms and blue helmets, were accompanied by a patrol dog when the tank shell struck on the road near the village of Blatt early Sunday morning. Two soldiers were evacuated by helicopter to a field hospital at headquarters in the border coastal town of Naqoura for surgery to remove darts from their body. One with minor wounds was treated by Norwegian medics. Norway has a battalion of 820 soldiers serving with UNIFIL, which is comprised of 5,000 soldiers from nine countries.
