The Trump administration's new national security strategy drastically changes US priorities. For the Americas, one of the key elements is what the White House calls the "Trump Corollary" to the 1823 Monroe Doctrine, reinforcing the region's status as the exclusive sphere of US influence, to the detriment of extra-regional powers, whether European or Asian. Regarding China, the strategy states that the United States "will deny competitors from outside the hemisphere the ability to position forces or other threatening capabilities, or to possess or control strategically vital assets."
