Health Insurance EOB Explained

A Health Insurance EOB is an Explanation of Benefits. You Will Receive an EOB from your health insurance company every time you use your insurance at a doctor's office, hospital, lab, etc. First, check that the date of service is a date that you received care. If the date does not match a date when you received care, then call your health insurance company. Second, the EOB will show how much the doctor/hospital charged. Third, the EOB will show how much of a discount the health insurance company applied to the charges OR if the claim was denied. If the claim was denied, then call your health insurance company. Fourth, the EOB will show how much you owe out-of-pocket. Save your EOB and compare the amount on the EOB to the amount on the actual bill from the doctor or hospital. If the EOB matches the bill and you still do not think it is right, call your health insurance company. If the EOB and the bill DO NOT match, then call the doctor or hospital and ask them why there is a difference.
