FANUC America Authorized System Integrator Minatech, in partnership with Herrmann Ultrasonics, developed this robotic ultrasonic welding system to use automatic tool changeover in order to offer a flexible solution where different types of welds may be required, all within one robotic workcell. Developed by ATI Industrial Automation, this special tool changer can carry and simultaneously switch over power, air, and signal. The workcell seen here demonstrates the capability and benefits of having the ability to automatically switch between multiple weld stacks for different types of welds without the need for manual changeover by a maintenance technician. There are four weld stacks that are “docked” on a rack next to the door panel, each with a different type of sonotrode and dedicated linear pneumatic actuator. When the cycle starts, the FANUC M-20iB/25 robot picks up the first stack and performs several staking operations. It changes over to a second staking tool with internal air cooling, and performs additional staking operations. During the staking operations, the FANUC robot welds by distance collapse to precisely control how far to collapse the staking post. The distance is measured by a precision linear encoder on the pneumatic actuator. The 3rd stack is a spot weld. This is used to embed a soft pad called shoddy pad to an automotive door panel that helps dampen vibrations and reduces road noise inside the cabin. This changeover technology is flexible and adaptable, and allows for the creation of an integrated welding machine capable of performing multiple welding applications all in one cycle. The fourth and final stack is for cutting. Here we see simple plunge cuts, but the system can also perform cuts and trimming for more complex paths.
