Welcome back to the studio for another lesson! Last week, we covered Barry Harris' rules for descending dominant scales along with a plethora of ways to practice those rules in a way that made musical and rhythmic sense. This week, we're gonna be applying those same ideas to an incredible concept that can really help spice up your dominant lines: The Family of Four Dominants. At its core, this is a system of substitution that gives us the "why" behind the questions of why can we alter certain notes in a dominant chord. We'll explore how these four chords are related to one another by the diminished chord, and then the diminished scale. Once we have an understanding of this relationship, we'll discuss how the different chords are related to each other and their home key. Once you have an understanding of the dominant family, it's time to put things into practice by learning an exercise using the dominant scale rules that I taught you last week. Then, I'll show you guys two phrases each, for major, and minor ii-V from this weeks PDF materials. All four of these examples will make use of the dominant family ideas to create more tension over the five chord before resolving to one.
