Deeply committed to the value of the past, he drew on traditional compositional procedures and carried forward the legacies of folk music and 16th-century art. Many of his early choral works possess such a strongly archaic character that Brahms’s own voice is at times almost overshadowed. These two foundations—folk tradition and historical art—situate Brahms within the intellectual current of historicism, a movement that sought to revitalize contemporary art by studying and immersing itself in the styles, forms, and techniques of earlier epochs. More than any other composer of his time, Brahms systematically absorbed elements from older music: from medieval modes and the contrapuntal techniques of the Netherlandish and Venetian schools to the works of Palestrina, Schütz, Handel, and Bach. In doing so, he distanced himself from the more progressive, idealistic styles of contemporaries like Berlioz and Liszt. The singability of Brahms’s vocal lines, the clarity and naturalness of his part-writing and harmonies, and his avoidance of the dramatic or superficially colorful have all contributed to the enduring success of his choral works. In their vitality and expressive strength, these works are major testaments to a rejuvenation of the old within the heart of Romantic art and culture.
