Augustus John was a notorious bohemian character who is said to have fathered over 100 children and he became the leading portrait painter in Britain at the beginning of the twentieth century. His later work was a disappointment following such a dazzling start and in later life he became the grand old man of British art. As he predicted, his work was completely eclipsed by that of his sister Gwen John although in recent years his reputation has been re-evaluated.
