5 Rock Bands That Imploded Over a Feud
Some bands break up over drugs. Some break up over money. And some break up because the men who built the whole thing together simply came to despise each other. These are five of the nastiest, ugliest, most personal feuds in the history of rock and roll — bandmates who wrote the anthems side by side, then spent years, and in some cases decades, refusing to stand in the same room. Some of them eventually made peace. Some of them never did. And two of them ran out of time before they ever got the chance. Guns N' Roses were the most dangerous band on Earth by the end of the 1980s, and their 1987 debut Appetite for Destruction became the best-selling debut album in American history. But as Axl Rose took more and more control of the band, the partnership at its core shattered. Guitarist Slash — the man whose playing was half the sound of Guns N' Roses — walked out in 1996, and the two didn't speak for roughly twenty years. Axl once described his old songwriting partner as "a cancer." Then, in 2016, they shocked everyone and reunited for one of the highest-grossing tours in the history of live music. Chicago were one of the most successful American bands of the 1970s and '80s, and bassist Peter Cetera sang the ballads that took them to number one. But the rest of the band still saw themselves as rockers, and the resentment over the soft hits — especially "If You Leave Me Now" — never went away. Cetera left in 1985, and the bad blood ran so deep that when Chicago was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, he refused to even show up. Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry were so notorious for their drug use that the press called them the Toxic Twins. In 1979, after years of friction, a backstage blow-up ended with Perry walking out of the band in the middle of recording an album. The classic lineup was broken for five years — until Perry returned in 1984 and Aerosmith went on to become bigger than ever, proof that some feuds really are survivable. KISS was an empire built on four characters — the Demon, the Starchild, the Spaceman, and the Catman. But founders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley pushed out the other two, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss — and years later did something colder still: they revived the Spaceman and Catman makeup on new members, without the men who created them. The feuding never fully healed. On October 16, 2025, Ace Frehley died at 74 after a fall — the fight finished not with an apology, but with a funeral. And then there's Van Halen. Guitar god Eddie Van Halen and showman David Lee Roth made some of the biggest American rock of the 1980s — until ego and ambition tore them apart and Roth was out in 1985. They traded insults for decades, reunited on stage years later, but never found real peace. When Eddie Van Halen died of cancer on October 6, 2020, that chance was gone for good. Five bands. Five wars. And a hard lesson about waiting too long to make things right. #ClassicRock #RockHistory #GunsNRoses #VanHalen #Aerosmith #KISS #Chicago #RockFeuds
