A few months ago, I received a phone call regarding this case. My client’s problem was a little different from the other five cases that usually come to me. Even in this twentieth century, some people still haven’t been able to completely free themselves from medieval superstitions. It has been about two months since my client moved into this house on rent with his family. The first few days after moving in went fairly well. But the problems started after a week or two. As soon as evening falls, they are unable to stay in the house. For example, they constantly feel as if someone is running around on the roof. Besides that, it feels as though someone keeps knocking on the room doors, but when the door is opened, no one is there. It seems as if someone is scratching the windows with their nails. There are also sounds as if someone is dragging their feet while walking on the dining room floor. Similar knocking sounds are heard at the doors of the bathroom and the kitchen as well. In short, sounds—different kinds of sounds—are the main source of fear. Most of these sounds come from the roof. After hearing everything from him, I fixed a date for the following Saturday, because Sunday was Bhoot Chaturdashi. There could hardly be a better day than that for a paranormal investigation. When I went to the house and climbed up to the roof, I was shocked. The roof is quite large in area, yet without going up there, I would never have understood the real reason. The roof of this house is truly mysterious. On one side of the roof, there is a large bed and a small cot. Above them is a tin shed, with arrangements for lighting and even a fan. Usually, an open roof does not require a fan unless someone lives there permanently. Under the bed, there are utensils; there is a bundle of human hair; on top of the bed are several old books, and there is also a picture of Kubera, with the symbol of the Dashamahavidya just below it. On the other side, there is a suitcase and a clothes rack. On the staircase leading up to the roof, there is a dressing table and many other pieces of furniture, none of which are used anymore. In other words, everything a person needs to live is present on the roof. On the southern side of the roof, there is a basin and two water tanks attached to it, neither of which contains any water. Yet, according to my client, at night they can hear the sound of water dripping from the tap of that basin. After talking further with my client, I came to know that the house owner’s wife passed away about ten years ago, and all the belongings kept on the roof belonged to her. The bed there was hers, and the small cot was the very place where she took her last breath. Not only that, beside the cot there is a plastic bag containing an extra bedsheet. That means the bedsheet is changed every day, even though no one uses that bed. The landlord is an elderly man. After his wife’s death, he lives in a room downstairs with his daughter, but he rarely comes out of the room and stays inside all the time. No one goes up to the roof either. While coming down from the roof staircase, I noticed the landlord’s main door—a door that has not been opened for almost ten years. The landlords use another door on the other side to move in and out. Now there are two questions: how does water drip from a tank that has no water?
