The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, officially founded in 1908, is one of the oldest museums in Greece, world-renowned for its outstanding Collection of the Minoan Civilisation, considered the first European civilisation. Rebuilt in the 1930s to plans by the modernist architect P. Karantinos, it underwent extensive renovations in 2007-2015, including the restoration of the building and the redesign of the exhibition. The museum exhibits are displayed in 27 galleries and span almost seven millennia, from the Neolithic (7th millennium BC) to the Roman period (3rd century AD). The creation and establishment of the first powerful central administration with an organised bureaucracy in Europe, together with the dominance of the seafaring Minoans in the Aegean Sea, are highlighted by the unique examples of Minoan art, while the incorporation of Crete in the cultural structures of the ancient Greek world is illustrated through the Greek and Roman Collections. Είναι ένα από τα παλαιότερα μουσεία της Ελλάδας και παγκοσμίως γνωστό για τη μοναδική Συλλογή έργων του μινωικού πολιτισμού, του πρώτου ευρωπαϊκού πολιτισμού. Ανακατασκευάστηκε τη δεκαετία του 1930 σε σχέδια του αρχιτέκτονα Π. Καραντινού, εκφραστή του μοντέρνου αρχιτεκτονικού κινήματος. Πρόσφατα υλοποιήθηκε ένα εκτεταμένο έργο ανακαίνισης, το οποίο περιλάμβανε την αποκατάσταση του κτηρίου και την αναδιοργάνωση της Έκθεσης. Τα εκθέματα του μουσείου παρουσιάζονται σε 27 αίθουσες και καλύπτουν σχεδόν επτά χιλιετίες, από τη Νεολιθική εποχή (7η χιλιετία π.Χ.) έως τη Ρωμαϊκή περίοδο (3ος αιώνας μ.Χ.). Η δημιουργία και η εδραίωση της πρώτης ισχυρής κεντρικής διοίκησης με οργανωμένη γραφειοκρατία στην Ευρώπη, μαζί με την κυριαρχία των θαλασσοπόρων Μινωιτών στο Αιγαίο, αναδεικνύονται μέσα από τα αριστουργήματα της μινωικής τέχνης, ενώ η ενσωμάτωση της Κρήτης στις πολιτισμικές δομές του ελληνικού κόσμου αποτυπώνεται στις Συλλογές των ιστορικών χρόνων.
