At just one year old, he moved to Lins, staying there until he was 16, when he went to play for Portuguesa de Desportos. He was a Brazilian football player considered one of the greatest players in Palmeiras' history, with a decisive participation in the conquests of the so-called "Academia" era. Leivinha started at Linense in 1965, at only fifteen years old. For the Lins club, he scored a goal in a friendly against Marília, on November 15 of that year. His performances caught the attention of major São Paulo clubs, and in 1966 he transferred to Portuguesa.
