On December 1, 1946, an 18-year-old college student named Paula Welden walked ahead of an elderly couple on Vermont's Long Trail. They watched her round a bend in the path. They reached the same bend seconds later. She was not there. The trail ahead was straight and empty. The search dogs followed her scent for nearly a mile. Then stopped on dry ground and refused to move. Over 300 soldiers searched the forest. Nothing was found. Vermont's state legislature passed a law the following spring creating the Vermont State Police, citing her case directly. Paula Welden has never been found. On July 18, 2007, Barbara Bolick was walking 20 feet ahead of her hiking partner on Bear Creek Overlook in Montana's Bitterroot Mountains, a trail made of loose shale where every footstep echoes. Her partner turned to look at a bird for less than a minute. When he turned back, she was gone. No sound. No movement in the brush.
