In this video we share our Top 8 snorkel locations on the Hawaiian island Oahu. 1. Hanauma Bay (southeast): Hanauma Bay is one of our favorite snorkel spots on Oahu. With more than 400 different fish species and healthy coral, this location is definitely worth a visit. Just be aware that only 3000 people are allowed to visit per day, so arrive early. Sandy entrances make it easy to enter the shallow water. Before you know it you'll be observing sea turtles, triggerfish, surgeonfish, moray eels, butterflyfish, parrotfish, goatfish and many more. A nearby power plant needs water for cooling purposes, after which warm water is released back into the ocean. As long as weather conditions allow for snorkeling, this is a fantastic spot for experienced snorkelers. Many typical Hawaiian reef fish can be observed. Sharks Cove (north): According to Hawaiian locals, this cove looks like a shark from an aerial view (which gives it its name). Whitetip reef sharks could be present, but expect to observe trumpetfish, parrotfish, triggerfish, moorish idol and green sea turtles. Make sure to check weather conditions as currents could be strong (which wouldn't allow to snorkel in this spot). Summertime is usually best. A sandy beach provides easy access to the water, even though the ocean floor is quiet rocky (so watch your feet). One of the best things about this location is the fact that the marine life lives close to the shore. In other words, you don't need to swim out far in order to observe some fish and even sea turtles. Again, check if weather conditions allow for snorkeling. If you ever stay within the Waikiki / Honolulu area, and if you like sea turtles, this could be a fun location to consider. It's necessary to join a boat (or catamaran) tour with an instructor. Waikiki (southeast): Waikiki offers a long coastline of various beaches. Our favorite beach in Waikiki is called Queens Beach because of its diverse marine life (and because fishing is not allowed). Beaches can be crowded because of all the tourists. On the other hand, there's a lot to do besides snorkeling. Hiking, Hula shows, shopping and even an aquarium make this a fun destination. Ko Olina (southwest): This snorkel spot consists of 4 manmade lagoons that allow for easy and family-friendly snorkeling. Both beginners and advanced snorkelers are able to enjoy this spot. Just like Waikiki, Ko Olina can be crowded. If one lagoon is too crowded, just walk towards the next one until you found a spot. You'll find various fish species and maybe even a sea turtle. Kuilima Cove (north): Kuilima Cove is also known as Turtle Bay, which means there's a good chance to observe green sea turtles. A rocky wall breaks the waves from the ocean, even though you always need to heck if weather conditions allow for snorkeling. The adjacent resort provides good facilities.
