If you or your child has S-shaped scoliosis, don't panic, as it can be corrected at home. Posture changes are often associated with scoliosis, but this isn't always the case. Scoliosis is a twisting of the costal arch, a rotation in the spine. All other cases are changes in posture, an ontological scoliosis, which is acquired due to muscular changes and functional pelvic tilt. These factors are the cause of S-shaped scoliosis. With S-shaped scoliosis, changes are typically limited to the lumbar spine, either to the right or left side. This occurs due to spasm of the piriformis and quadratus back muscles. The quadratus back muscles attach to the pelvic bone and lower ribs, causing the torso to bend laterally. Shortening and spasm can cause the hip and pelvis to rise upward, while one shoulder can sag. This can be corrected by stretching the quadratus back muscles and performing exercises at home.
