Exploring the Historic Union Canal in Pennsylvania & America's Oldest Transportation Tunnel

The Union Canal was once a crucial link between eastern and western Pennsylvania — and today, its forgotten remnants still hide in plain sight. In this video, I explore the history and surviving remains of the Union Canal in Pennsylvania, focusing on the Reading area, Berks County, and Lebanon County, and culminating at the Union Canal Tunnel, the oldest existing transportation tunnel in the United States. Built during the early American canal era, the Union Canal was envisioned as the “Golden Link” connecting Philadelphia with the interior of Pennsylvania via the Schuylkill and Susquehanna Rivers. Although construction began as early as the 1790s, delays, engineering challenges, and later competition from railroads ultimately led to the canal’s early demise.
