The goal is not to make the effect obvious. The goal is to make the listener feel that the vocal becomes slightly bigger, more alive, and more special at the right moment. This technique can be especially useful in choruses, important words, or phrases where you want the vocal to feel more expressive without simply increasing the volume. When combined with reverb, the side halo layer can feel more cohesive and naturally connected to the vocal, rather than sounding like a separate effect.
