Dense mountain village overlooking the sea The Sada Misaki Peninsula, located approximately 40 km west-southwest of western Ehime Prefecture, juts into the Bungo Channel. Its maximum width is 6.4 km and its minimum width is 0.8 km at its center. It is composed of Sanbagawa crystalline schist (metamorphic rock) and is home to copper-bearing iron sulfide deposits. More than 30 small- and medium-sized mines were established here between the 1880s and 1940s, making it the second largest copper-producing region in Shikoku. The peninsula's main axis forms an anticline, plunging sharply into the Seto Inland Sea's Iyo Nada in the north and the Uwa Sea in the south. Major settlements are found on the narrow flatlands at the head of the bay. Mikue on the Iyo Nada side, and Misaki, Kumachi, and Minatoura on the Uwa Sea side have developed as transit points and fishing bases since the Edo period. However, there are also numerous settlements clinging to the slopes, each with their distinctive Iyo blue stone (Sanbagawa metamorphic rock) stone walls. Until the 1970s, it was known as an isolated island. Yoma is a settlement on a slope on the northern coast of the peninsula. It is a farming and fishing village with a well-established fishing port, but the slopes going up and down from the port to the village are surprisingly steep. The village is relatively large and makes for a challenging walk. Myojin is a village on the western side of the peninsula, overlooking the Iyo Nada Sea in the Seto Inland Sea. Cottages with piled rock walls line the coastline, typical of the old Misaki town, and the village clings to the steep slope. It is a beautiful village with flat stonework made of metamorphic rock. Inoura is a settlement on flat land facing the bay of Misaki Port, where the National Route 94 Ferry departs and arrives, and is characterized by stone walls made of stacked blue stone. The gables of the houses face the sea, making them integrated into the stone walls, protecting the houses and front yards from strong winds. Kushi/Yoma is a village at the tip of the peninsula, overlooking the Iyo Nada Sea in the Seto Inland Sea.
