2,000 lbs of Impact. Zero Brain Damage. The Engineering Inside a Bighorn Skull

Two bighorn sheep rams. 600 lbs combined. 30 mph head-on collision. Over 2,000 lbs of force — and they walk away every time. Here's the engineering inside the skull that makes it possible. This wildlife conservation documentary follows 15 seasons of bighorn sheep research — from the Coso Range petroglyphs in California's Mojave Desert, to the last pathogen-free herd in Wyoming's Ferris-Seminoe Range, to the desert subspecies losing their water sources in Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, Arizona. The science: trabecular bone hydraulics, medial-lateral horn oscillation (Bucknell University research), fecal DNA population mapping, 82,000 GPS data points from 50 collared animals, and the Idaho genetic cluster study rewriting translocation policy nationwide. Most people who've hiked the high country have never seen one. And that's kind of the point — they live up where the rock runs out of trail and the air gets thin and the mountain lions don't follow as easy. Huge thanks to Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Yosemite Conservancy, California Dept of Fish and Wildlife, Idaho Dept of Fish and Game, Wild Sheep Foundation, the National Bighorn Sheep Center in Dubois Wyoming, Cabeza Prieta NWR, and the long-term research programs at Ram Mountain Alberta and Bucknell University — without their data, none of this story gets told right. https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/...
