Polymer clay (plastic) is much more than just artificial clay. It can be used to imitate virtually any artistic effect and surface: glass, wood, fabric, natural clay, porcelain, ivory, and any ornamental stone. The possibilities are endless, and everything depends solely on the skill and talent of the artist. Working with polymer clay easily adapts the principles of blacksmithing (Mokume-Gane technique), weaving (Bargello technique), woodcarving, painting, and even pastry chefs. This article discusses one such technique: millefiori. Millefiori (from the Italian "milli" meaning "thousand" and "fiori" meaning "flower") is an ancient Italian glassblowing technique in which a design is formed along the entire length of a glass cylinder. A pattern (usually simple flowers) is formed from colored glass. The resulting wide cylinder is then heated and drawn to the desired thickness into a thin glass rod or stick, so that the same pattern is preserved on each cut. In this workshop, we will create a polymer clay cane using the Millefiori technique. In the next workshop on sculpting, we will find a worthy use for this cane and create jewelry from it.
