"Son de los diablos" (2) VICENTE VASQUEZ. (Entrevista 1978)

Don Vicente Vásquez Díaz, a great guitarist in Peru, participated in the LPs SOCABON and CUMANANA, produced by Nicomedes Santa Cruz, as well as in the Conjunto Nacional de Folklore, directed by Victoria Santa Cruz, and in the founding of Perú Negro, directed by Ronaldo Campos, in the 1970s. Vicente Vásquez is one of the main figures in the revaluation of the Afro-Peruvian musical culture of the Peruvian coast. This interview, given to Chalena Vásquez and Max Brandt in 1978, has become, 35 years later, a masterclass of incalculable historical value. Here is an excerpt from that interview, featuring him performing the music of Son de los Diablos, a comparsa (carnival troupe) that initially performed during the Corpus Christi celebrations and later moved to the Lima Carnival. In addition, Don Vicente talks about the last great leader of Son, Mr. Francisco Andrade, and discusses the festejo and zapateo dances. The genres performed in this interview are: festejo, son de los diablos, marinera and resbalosa, alcatraz, zamacueca, ingá, landó, toro mata, zapateo, and agua 'e nieve, which will be shown on this channel. The image of Don Vicente Vásquez in this video is from a pointillist painting by Mónica Rojas, created in 1990. Chalena Vásquez June 2013
