Its roots are believed to date back to the late 16th century, coinciding with the construction of Tokushima Castle by Hachisuka Iemasa. Legend has it that the castle's completion was celebrated with free sake for the townspeople, leading to spontaneous, joyful dancing in the streets. This exuberant celebration laid the foundation for what would become Awaodori. Over centuries, Awaodori evolved from a simple, uninhibited dance into a more organized and refined performing art. While the exact origins are debated, it likely absorbed elements from various traditional folk dances and Buddhist 'Bon Odori' (dances performed during the Obon festival to honor ancestors). The dance is characterized by its distinctive rhythm, known as "Zomeki," played by traditional instruments like shamisen (three-stringed lute), taiko (drums), kane (bell), and shinobue (bamboo flute).
