Ballaké Sissoko - Mali Live at Afrika Festival Hertme - The Netherlands date of performance - July 7, 2024 Ballaké Sissoko is one of Mali's foremost musicians and a world-renowned master of the 21-string kora, which has become the musical emblem of West Africa. After more than forty years of faithful service to the 21 strings of the kora, Ballaké Sissoko has achieved the status of elder. For him, it has always been a story of love, a love that was evident from the very beginning, when he first began playing his father's instrument, driven by his own heart and nothing else. His father, Djeli Mady Sissoko, the kora giant and co-director of the famous National Instrumental Ensemble of Mali, never exerted any pressure on his firstborn son, although he must have sensed his strong attraction to the instrument. Ballaké would sit for hours in silence, at a safe distance, listening to his father play. So finally, Djeli Mady decided to entrust the key to the room where the kora was kept to his young son. For someone with such boundless curiosity, this could not have been a greater invitation. And so, Ballaké began to play. After his father's sudden death, he joined the National Instrumental Ensemble, which brought together the greatest instrumentalists from all corners of Mali. There, he learned from his elders (including Sidiki Diabate, Toumani's father), simply by listening endlessly. Ballaké's mastery of the classical kora repertoire and his gift for improvisation, the fruit of those long periods of silent attention, soon became apparent. But from a young age, he felt the urge to bring the ancient art of the kora face to face with the music of other worlds, a desire that was not felt within the National Ensemble. Therefore, he embarked on a solo career. He discovered playing with Eastern string instruments, but also with Western ones like the cello. Many years later, this led to a meeting with cellist Vincent Segal, with whom he formed a close musical bond. Also worth mentioning is the trio 3MA, in which he plays with Moroccan oud player Driss el Maloumi and valiha virtuoso Rajery from Madagascar. Rajery has visited Hertme several times, including last year. This year, he released an album with South African guitarist Derek Gripper, who also performed at the Spookhoes last year. ----- Ballaké Sissoko is een van de belangrijkste muzikanten van Mali en een wereldberoemde meester op de 21-snarige kora, die het muzikale embleem van West- Afrika is geworden. Na ruim veertig jaar trouwe dienst aan de 21 snaren van de kora heeft Ballaké Sissoko de status van ouderling bereikt. Het is voor hem altijd een verhaal over liefde geweest, een liefde die duidelijk was vanaf het allereerste begin, toen hij voor het eerst op zijn vaders instrument begon te spelen, aangespoord door zijn eigen hart en niets anders. Zijn vader, Djeli Mady Sissoko, de kora-gigant en mede-directeur van het beroemde Nationale Instrumentale Ensemble van Mali, oefende nooit enige druk uit op zijn eerstgeboren zoon, hoewel hij zijn sterke aantrekkingskracht naar het instrument moet hebben gevoeld. Ballaké zat urenlang in stilte, op veilige afstand, te luisteren naar het spel van zijn vader. Dus uiteindelijk besloot Djeli Mady de sleutel van de kamer waar de kora werd bewaard toe te vertrouwen aan zijn jonge zoon. Voor iemand met zo'n grenzeloze nieuwsgierigheid kon dit geen grotere uitnodiging betekenen. En dus begon Ballaké te spelen. Na het plotselinge overlijden van zijn vader werd hij lid van het Nationale Instrumentale Ensemble, dat de grootste instrumentalisten samenbracht uit alle hoeken van Mali. Daar leerde hij van zijn oudsten (waaronder Sidiki Diabate, vader van Toumani), gewoon door eindeloos te luisteren. Ballaké’s beheersing van het klassieke kora-repertoire en zijn gave voor improvisatie, vrucht van die lange perioden van stille aandacht werden al snel duidelijk. Maar al op jonge leeftijd voelde hij de drang om de oude kunst van de kora oog in oog te brengen met de muziek van andere werelden, een verlangen dat binnen het Nationale Ensemble niet leefde. Daarom begon hij aan een solocarrière. Hij ontdekt het samenspelen met oosterse snaarinstrumenten maar ook met westerse zoals de cello. Dit leidde vele jaren later, tot een ontmoeting met cellist Vincent Segal met wie hij een innige muzikale band aanging. Niet onbelangrijk om te vermelden is het trio 3MA, waarin hij samenspeelt met de Marokkaanse oud-speler Driss el Maloumi en de valiha-vituoos Rajery uit Madagaskar. Rajery is meerdere malen in Hertme geweest o.a. vorig jaar. Dit jaar kwam een album uit met de Zuid-Afrikaanse gitarist Derek Gripper, die ook vorig jaar in het Spookhoes optrad.
