AMD 80C188 Decapping and Silicon Inspection

In this video I take apart the 80C188 16-bit microprocessor from AMD. The 80C188 was made to be pin and code compatible with the Intel 8088 microprocessor. To get to the silicon die inside, I use heat from a hot air rework station to breakdown the plastic shell. The air temp is set to the max this unit can do (480°C) and the air speed is maxed out. Parts of this process are sped up, but from start to finish was about 10 minutes. Behind the camera, I have on safety goggles to prevent parts from flying into my eyes, and I am also wearing a respirator as this process can give off some not-so-great-smelling-and-probably-bad-for-your-health fumes. Timestamps: 5:13 - The silicon die is liberated from it's plastic prison. 6:40 - Observation of the die with the metallurgical microscope.
