Round Mountain Hut | The Final Chapter in the Kosciuszko Huts Rebuild Program

Round Mountain Hut marks the final chapter of the Kosciuszko Huts Rebuild Program, bringing to a close one of the most significant heritage restoration projects ever undertaken in Kosciuszko National Park. Originally built in 1913 by grazier John Pierce before being rebuilt in 1953 by renowned builder Jack Bailey, Round Mountain Hut has long been an important stop for stockmen, walkers, skiers and visitors making their way towards Mount Jagungal. This final film explores the hut's fascinating history, its unique snow hatch design, and the challenges of faithfully rebuilding it while preserving its heritage. The documentary also looks back on the entire rebuild program following the devastating 2019–20 bushfires, which saw 11 historic huts restored through the dedication of NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Kosciuszko Huts Association, descendant families and hundreds of volunteers. Project Manager Megan Bowden reflects on the remarkable journey—from recording the fire-damaged sites, planning each rebuild and working alongside master builders Roger Rosenboom and Peter Dow, to seeing families return to places that hold generations of memories. The series also highlights the importance of passing traditional building skills to future generations, ensuring these remarkable structures continue to stand as living museums, emergency shelters and enduring symbols of Australia's High Country heritage. As Round Mountain Hut completes the final rebuild, the legacy of the Kosciuszko huts lives on for generations to come.
