Do we really need three different trailer hitch balls for towing a trailer?
If you are planning on towing a trailer for the first time, trailers come with one of three sizes of trailer couplers to be attached to the same size trailer hitch ball. Whether you are towing a boat trailer, small trailer, utility trailer, yard trailer, open trailer or any other type of trailer that isn't a heavy duty commercial grade trailer, trailer couplers and trailer balls come sized as 1 7/8", 2" and 2 5/16". Typically these sizes are related to the weight of the trailer and load on the trailer but often a smaller size ball can also be rated for a greater weight while a larger ball can sometimes only be rated for a lower weight. This can make it confusing especially to people who do not normally tow a trailer or have only had experience with one trailer set up. Because there is only 7/16" difference in size from the biggest trailer ball to the smallest it seems to me that we have an opportunity to standardize some of these trailer hitch balls and trailer couplers to make it less confusing and potentially safer for people hauling trailers. Boat trailers, utility trailers, yard trailers, open trailers, car trailers and other light duty trailers often use these trailer hitch couplers and trailer hitch balls.
