Durston X-Dome 2 Review: The Best 2-Person Freestanding Tent?

Is the Durston X-Dome 2 the best two-person freestanding backpacking tent on the market? After taking it backpacking with Anna and Django, then taking it car camping, I’m seriously impressed. The X-Dome 2 combines the roominess of many three-person tents with a weight of around three pounds, depending on the inner and pole configuration you choose. Durston X-Dome 2: https://durstongear.com/products/x-do... (Non-affiliate link) In this initial review, I cover the different pole and inner options, the fly-only and inner-only pitches, interior space, doors, vestibules, ventilation, weather resistance, and more. I also test whether it truly fits two 25-inch sleeping pads and show how our 40-inch double-wide pad works with the tent’s parallelogram-shaped floor. The X-Dome 2 is spacious, lightweight, versatile, and surprisingly functional, but it isn’t perfect. Switching between the inner-only and full-fly configurations takes more work than with a traditional freestanding tent, and getting maximum wind resistance requires additional guy lines, stakes, and some careful setup. This is still an initial review. We need more nights, rain, wind, and long-term use before I can give a complete durability assessment. But so far, this may be the best two-person freestanding backpacking tent I’ve used.
